Chapter Five

At the rate she was going she’d be wearing her pyjamas to the truffle hunt. Gumboots were recommended; pyjamas weren’t.

Bethany frowned at her reflection in the small bathroom mirror. Even with the restricted view of the black evening gown there was no doubt it wasn’t right. With its plunging neckline and barely there straps it was yet another dress she’d bought while trying to discover who she was.

She added the gown to the half-full bag she’d be taking to the charity shop next town visit. She’d been so determined to break free from being Edna’s daughter she’d worn clothes that attracted guys her mother disapproved of. It was no wonder they’d all been from the city and more interested in her cleavage than what she had to say.

The next gown was strapless and a blood-red satin with a thigh-high split that she’d worn to a charity ball held in a cotton gin. She didn’t even zip it up before she added it to the reject bag.

With only two dresses left from the stash she’d collected from her childhood room after work, she didn’t like her chances of finding something she felt comfortable in. If she had to she could leave early tomorrow to shop in Orange before the truffle hunt began mid-afternoon.

The next dress, a sequined gold number, barely reached mid-thigh, which left one final gown. She held up the ice-blue dress she couldn’t ever remember wearing, a tag dangling from the label. The full-skirted gown featured a fit and flare style and a low but modest neckline. She thought hard. The dress had to be one her mother bought for her year twelve formal when she’d still been at school. As the dress had been purchased without consulting her, there’d been a huge fight. In the end she’d borrowed a gown off a friend, deliberately choosing one that was the polar opposite of the conservative style she held.

Looking at the dress, which made her eyes more blue than grey, she could understand why her mother had thought it would suit her. With her mother having now apologised for being so high-handed with decisions that only Bethany should make and following through on her promise to no longer meddle, she was confident that what had started with this dress had now finished. She was the one in control of her life.

She slid the gown over her head. She’d grown taller, and filled out, but the ankle-length hem would suit having to walk through the vineyard in gumboots. As for her cleavage, compared to her other gowns this was almost puritanical.

The squeak of the garden gate had her slipping off the dress and pulling on her jeans and a white shirt. She wasn’t expecting visitors. Pulse racing, she listened to determine whether the footsteps belonged to Mac. Since their ride yesterday morning she hadn’t seen him, although they’d exchanged texts about where they’d each stay tomorrow night and where they’d meet.

Fliss’s voice sounded. ‘I come bearing food and gumboots.’

Bethany flicked on the hallway light.
